ALTERNATIVE COOKING METHODS
What a great and informative meeting we had for this month’s Relief Society Weekday meeting and what a great turnout!
Leisa Munns started us off with some very interesting Utah history on the making of Utah’s first 45 star flag. Utah was the 45th state to the Union. Then we all got to make our own hand-crafted flags. Leisa had all the kits ready and while we learned about alternative cooking methods, we sewed away – or at least we were supposed to. I was so interested in what was being said, I kept forgetting to sew.
Several alternative cooking methods were shown by Dave Noack. He started off by showing us a “thermal thermos” that he had cooked rice in by just heating up the water prior to putting it in the thermos. Simple and cheap (you can get them anywhere). You can also purchase something he referred to as a “thermal cooker” – larger than the thermos and real efficient. You can heat up the inner pot of food, put it in the insulated container and it will cook your food and keep it hot all day. He also showed us a “solar box cooker” that he had made and said he would show our husband’s how to make them so we can all have one. This cooker uses the sun which reflects off a foil material to cook your food. It’s larger and can cook an entire family meal and more.
Next Corey Statham talked to us about Dutch oven cooking. We learned different foods that can be cooked in a Dutch oven, the different methods of cooking, and how to clean them. Then we got to eat some of his fabulous Dutch oven cooking – hamburger stew and fruit cobbler. Yum!
It was a great night – thanks to all!!

Permalink Reply by Sally Blake on July 17, 2011 at 6:05am It was a great meeting. I was very interested in the thermal cooker. It is something that I would love to get and have for an emegency or just to use now as well. It was so interesting that you could use the sun to cook with in an emergency. It is so great to know that we have such a wealth of knowledge in our ward and they are willing to share with us. Leisa went to a lot of work so each of us could have our own flag. I am still working on mine but I plan to get it done for the 24th. Thanks again Leisa. And last but not least, thanks to Cory for the delicious stew and cobbler. I agree with Gina that it was a great night.

Permalink Reply by Gina Humphries on July 23, 2011 at 9:54pm Hi Mary Ann, Here's a great website that tells you lots about Dutch oven cooking and has really good information about cleaning them -- even older ones that are not in good shape http://www.richsoil.com/cast-iron.jsp. As for recipes, there weren't any handed out at this Relief Society meeting (usually there are). But the guy who did the demonstration just mentioned what he had used. The stew was hamburger, carrots, potatoes, cream of mushroom (or chicken) soup and milk. It was really good and creamy. The cobbler was a small bag frozen mixed berries, a cake mix poured on top, and a can of sprite (I think that's all). With the cobbler, you would put charcoal briquettes on top so it bakes. Hope this helps.
